Homemade Christmas gifts are exactly what homesteading is all about. And right now is the absolute perfect time to get started on some handmade goodies for your loved ones.

Honestly, one of my favorite things about the holidays is the months I spend preparing for my gift-giving. I brainstorm all year long for the perfect made-with-love present for all of the adults in our family. The kids are easy to tackle – heck, my daughter would be happier than a pig in mud with a cardboard box and some crayons.

But gifting for adults is an entirely different story. You’ve already been sending them presents for most, if not all, of their life, and they usually just end up buying whatever they need anyway.

Especially Mr. Woodworker, who insists that you can never have enough tools.

So it takes quite a bit of brainstorming and even more creativity to plan out all of these homemade gifts each year. After all, a person can only get so many crocheted blankets before they’ll start giving them away, and that’s the last thing you want to have done to something you put our blood, sweat, and tears into, right?

In an effort to help you avoid all of that, we picked our brains and came up with 15 of the best homemade gift ideas that are perfect for (almost) every adult in your life:

Baked Goods

What better way to say “happy holidays” than a tin filled with your all-time favorite cookies? Or, maybe your best friend just loves your grandma’s secret recipe scones. Everyone has a favorite! A few years ago, I dug up a well-hidden recipe from the depths of the Internet just so I could make my dad’s favorite cookie as his homemade present that year. And they were such a hit!

A touch of homemade is as easy as a batch of cookies

Is your certain someone watching their junk food intake? No worries! There’s a plethora of recipes for healthy alternatives online. No matter who it’s for, a special gesture like their favorite treat will go a long way.

Sew up some pot holders

Time to dust off that old sewing machine for this one (or maybe borrow mom’s)! Sewing is a big staple with homesteaders and because of that, many homemade Christmases are sewn with love.

Even if you’re not so great at sewing, small items like pot holders, place mats, and table runners are an easy way to help you break into the hobby. And there are tons of free tutorials on sites like Craftsy.

Hand-drawn Art

Like to draw? Work up a sketch for the next adult on your gift list. And no one said you had to draw well to do it either –learn to draw kits like this one are all the rage for budding artists.

A fun twist on this: have the kids draw their best pictures and collage them in a large frame. Use the collage as a background and overlay family photos. This time next year, that’ll sure to be the centerpiece in their grandparents’ home decor.

Craft a tool organizer for the DIYer

Most of us have at least one person on our gift list that loves tools. But when you’ve already bought them every tool known to man, what’s left? A tool organizer, of course!

Try your own hand at woodworking with an easy DIY tool organizer – perfect for that one woodworker who insists on using only hand tools, or the guy who never seems to have time to organize his workbench.

Knit a cozy winter set

Learning needlework has never been easier! From Youtube videos to community center classes, there’s a learning medium available for everyone at every stage.

Knit or crochet a hat and scarf set for your friend in his favorite colors, or make your mom a cozy set of mittens. The simplicity of a warm set for the winter made with love is a homemade gift that keeps on giving.

Make a memories album

Photo albums may be a thing of the past, but this one is sure to please the older adults on your list. Grab some photo paper and an album, print out your favorite memories, and scrapbook for the afternoon! Before you know it, you’ll have a fun homemade gift – perfect for parents you don’t see as often as you’d like, or that friend who recently moved across the country.

Bonus: make this homemade gift for a grandparent and fill it with photos of the grandchildren through the years! Make it a family activity and have the kids draw up their favorite memories, then scatter them throughout the book.

Make a book

Years ago, my sister gifted me a thoughts book – hand-cut blank pages bound together with a thick cover, ready in waiting for anything that crossed my mind. It’s still one of my favorite possessions! And it was this homemade gift that first introduced me to Japanese book binding techniques.

Luckily, the advent of the Internet has afforded us with a wealth of knowledge, and there are plenty of book binding videos available online to learn how to make this for your next homemade Christmas gift. Bind up a thoughts book for your favorite writer, or fill a happiness book with motivating quotes and blank pages for their own happy additions. Whatever you choose, a handmade book is sure to please.

Make homemade soap

Got a big batch of friends to gift to, but no idea what to get all of them? Grab some soap supplies and whip up a few bars of soap! This gift idea can get a little pricey if you’re not careful, but second-hand places like your area online market sites or even thrift stores can help you keep costs low.

Paint a picture

Painting may not be your forte, but chances are at least one person on your Christmas list is sure to love a bit of homemade art. Choose their favorite animal,  plant, or even famous painter and recreate it with the help of paint by number kits.

Make some jewelry

There’s an abundance of ways you can make jewelry for both men and women on your gift list this year. Consider a set of friendship bracelets to share with your oldest friend. Can you crochet? Grab some colored twine and crochet a set of earrings using a simple pair of hoops.

You can even make a colorful macaroni necklace with some old yarn and a cheap box of elbows as a gag gift for that holiday party you’re just dying to go to.

Whatever you decide, a handmade piece of jewelry is sure to delight.

Re-purpose some old furniture

If you’re more of the handy DIYer, consider re-purposing a piece of furniture. Whether you have a younger sibling who just got their first apartment, or an older relative who finally settled down after traveling the country for eight years, a new accent entry piece or reupholstered foot stool is sure to please.

Make it frugal by heading to your nearest Habitat for Humanity resale shop or thrift store for supplies.

Make a quilt block wall hanger

Quilts are a beautiful gift for any adult, but they are also time consuming. A great alternative is the quilt block wall hanger – a small decorative item that can easily be made to match any motif.

Don’t know how to quilt? Check out your local fabric shops and sign up for free (or super cheap) sewing classes. Even if the seats are full, most shop owners are more than happy to help you with additional resources and tips.

The beautiful thing about macrame is its versatility. With a bit of cording and some beads, you can create wall decor, hanging baskets, jewelry, and tons more. Even I’m adding this one to my gift list – I found this super cheap plant hanger kit that I can’t wait to make for my mom!

Write something special

Maybe you’re a poet at heart, or you’re like me and just can’t help but write all the time. Writing a short story, songs, or collection of poems is a great gift to share with those closest to you. Make a mix tape for your significant other, or combine it with our handmade book idea above and write inspirational poetry for them to read throughout the year.

Another idea: write a collection of letters and set up delivery with your local post office. Have them deliver certain letters on special days – birthdays, days of mourning, or anniversaries. Getting a letter in the mail is one of the most special gifts anyone can receive.

Give a coupon book

Remember those little coupon books you used to make as a kid – that small assortment of construction paper artfully decorated with crayons and then stapled together? Apply those creative skills today and make the next adult on your list a coupon book. This one is great to give to parents to spark a bit of reminiscing of your youth, or to your best friend who just had a baby.

Coupons could include cleaning their house for free, cooking them dinner, or helping them move to that new apartment they’ve been eyeing. Got a friend who you haven’t seen in a while? Shoot them some eCoupons, and promise a weekend lunch, or a night full of video games or your favorite movie trilogy (popcorn included).

The holidays don’t have to be hard, but they don’t have to be store-bought, either. Amazing made-with-love gifts are just an afternoon away! Aim for that personal touch this year with some of these homemade Christmas gifts for the adults in your life.

Happy Homesteading!
